Thought Leaders Conference: Disability and Workforce

Wednesday 15th June 2022, 12.45-13.15

Disabled people participate less than non-disabled people in sport and leisure activities, and they are even less likely to be working in the sector. Numerous barriers exist from negative attitudes to physical access issues that hinder disabled people’s commencement and progress in training and work in the fitness and leisure sector.

This session, led by Hilary Farmiloe from Aspire will discuss the new ‘EmployAbility Leisure’ guidance recently published by Aspire to understand how disabled people, training providers and employers can work together to create a more diverse and inclusive sector workforce and the implications this has on the whole organisation and its customers.

Panel members who will share their experiences include Lee Welch, a disabled fitness professional who will talk about his journey and along with Ian Ling his manager from Everyone Active will highlight the importance of providing disabled people with the initial opportunities that can lead developing highly skilled and talented professionals.

Katy Barrow will share her experience of adapting instructor training for disabled learners and what she has learnt along the way. The session will also include Colin Huffen from CIMSPA will talk about how CIMSPA is working to embed the guidance into their own standards and how they will support the sector to deliver accessible training courses through their endorsement and quality assurance processes.
